PNP accuses Government of issuing import licences to unqualified persons

Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture Dr Dayton Campbell, speaking in Maggoty, St. Elizabeth on Saturday night

Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture Dr Dayton Campbell is accusing the government of issuing import licences to unqualified persons following the devastation to the sector caused by Hurricane Beryl.

Dr Campbell, speaking in St. Elizabeth on Saturday night, claimed that local farmers are reeling from the influx of imported produce.

Agriculture Minister Floyd Green reported last week that, with the rebound of the agricultural sector, there have been fewer requests for importation of crops to supplement the market.

Mr Green said, while vegetable crops have mostly returned, some vine fruits such as melons and cantaloupe are still in scarce supply.
