PNP councillor Lambert Weir appears in court on corruption charges

By Clinton McGregor

People's National Party (PNP) Councillor for the Claremont Division in St. Ann, Lambert Weir, appeared before the St. Andrew Parish Court Tuesday on charges of breaching the Corruption Prevention Act and Integrity Commission Act.

Mr. Weir was charged in July following a ruling by Director of Corruption Prosecution Keisha Prince Kameka.

The ruling stemmed from a report by Director of Investigation Kevon Stephenson that was tabled in Parliament in May.

The Integrity Commission says Mr. Weir knowingly made a false statement in his Statutory Declaration for the periods ending December 31, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

The Integrity Commission found that the councillor failed to include information on a Toyota Prado he owned over the period.

According to the report, in two letters dated October 2 and November 26, 2020, Mr. Weir explained to the Commission's Director of Information and Complaints that he did not include the referenced vehicle in his Statutory Declaration because it was co-owned.

The Director of Investigations says Mr. Weir did not take advantage of opportunities in March, April and June 2022 to answer to the allegations against him.

The Director of Corruption Prevention who appeared in court Tuesday, handed over statements collected in the case to lead defence counsel Oswest Senior-Smith.

Mr. Senior-Smith said he will be taking instructions from his client, who is scheduled to return to court on October 13.
