Political commentator Dr. Nadeen Spence, responding to Morning Agenda host Jodi-Ann Quarrie
Political commentator Dr. Nadeen Spence has called for the People's National Party to cease its attack on the new head of the Financial Investigations Division (FID), Dennis Chung, as until proven otherwise, it appears that due process was followed in the job selection process.
Dr. Spence says the country should await the response from the Public Service Commission, to questions on the selection process that led to his appointment as Chief Technical Director.
Speaking Tuesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, she said the PNP's arguments appear to unfairly target Mr. Chung and not the selection process, in the call for him to be removed from the position.
Dr. Spence said the stance of the PNP is puzzling.
"This is what I'm a little bit confused about in terms of what the issue is.... Because you have a problem with the candidate that the process yielded doesn't mean that you take to the street. I've never seen that before," she said, adding that the call for Mr. Chung to be removed from the position is extraordinary.
"It is extraordinary because then, how do you remove somebody from a job who's been assigned a job? Is it that government should walk in and say, 'We have to remove you. Come, pack up your stuff and go. We can't give you the position.' Is that the procedure? Is that what is fair given our labour laws?" she questioned.
The PNP has declared that it will not be backing down from its opposition of the appointment, but Dr. Spence has contended that the position of the PNP is fuelled more by the impending general election than doubts about Mr. Chung's ability to do the job.
"I think the PNP can have their concerns, but I think the response at this time is more fuelled by the moment that we are in, that we are due elections, and perhaps the PNP are down in the polls, than it is through any real serious concerns about the man who's taking the office, to be honest."
The PNP has argued that Mr. Chung lacks pertinent qualifications and has compromised himself with his public comments, defending Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness in relation to his financial affairs, which have been referred to the FID for further investigation.
Questions were submitted to the PSC through the Office of the Services Commissions after it was revealed that the requirement for law enforcement experience was removed from a second advertisement for the position of Chief Technical Director of the FID.
