The police have laid fraud charges against a legal consultant after he was accused of failing to return $8.9 million given to him by a man as part payment towards the purchase of an apartment in St Andrew.
Sixty-one year-old Christopher Powell, of a Manchester address, has been charged with fraudulent conversion.
According to the Half-Way Tree police, in January 2024, Powell collected the money as part payment on a two-bedroom apartment, located in Kingston 10, which police say was valued at $50 million.
The complainant subsequently became suspicious and requested a refund, but Powell allegedly became elusive. The matter was reported to the police, and an investigation launched.
Mr Powell was arrested in Mandeville on Friday, August 8, and transported to Half-Way Tree in St Andrew, where he was charged after being questioned.
