Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake is calling for motorists to be responsible when using the roads in order to support a further reduction in road fatalities.
The National Road Safety Council has reported a reduction in road deaths for July, when compared with previous months.
Twenty road users died in July as against 26 in June and 31 in May.
Dr. Blake said the police will be playing their part in enforcing the Road Traffic Act in a bid to keep fatalities down.
"So I use this opportunity to appeal to the motoring public, to exercise due care in the use of the roads. And it is about saving lives. We have done it before, ladies and gentlemen, and we can do it again. We collectively demonstrated that we can do this, and so let's not drop the ball. Let's step up to the plate," he urged.
Dr. Blake was speaking at the handing over ceremony for 40 motor vehicles to the Jamaica Constabulary Force on Wednesday.
The vehicles will be deployed to highway patrols across the island.
Dr. Blake said the police will continue efforts to ensure residents are safe as more vehicles are provided for patrols islandwide.
"In enhancing our visibility in communities, other public spaces and all roadways, these vehicles will advance our commitment to citizen safety and help us to create communities and a nation that are resilient to crime and disorder," he said, insisting that the police's presence must be felt.
