Beginning this month, 100 phablets will be provided to the police as part of a pilot project aimed at improving the traffic ticket management system.
A phablet is a pocket-sized mobile device that is a bit larger than a smartphone.
The equipment will allow for electronic recording of tickets, eliminating the need for manual data entry, and enabling quick identification of dangerous drivers.
Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang said the machine that will record the tickets will be connected to police control centre, court offices, Tax Administration Jamaica and the Island Traffic Authority.
He explained that once a ticket is written in a phablet, it cannot be removed from the system.
It will have real-time connection to the police database so that vehicles that may be involved in criminal activities can be identified.
Dr. Chang said the technology will also assist the police in apprehending criminals.
