A police killing in the wee hours of Friday morning has
sparked a massive demonstration in the Sunvalley Road area of St. James.
The dead man has only been identified by his alias, Shabba.
The police say about 3:40 Friday morning a team went into the Bottom Pen Area of Glendevon on assignment.
They say the team was greeted by gunfire.
"The police returned the fire and when the shooting subsided one man was found suffering from gunshot wounds. A Glock Transporter semi-automatic pistol was found beside him. The firearm contained two live cartridges. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead," said CCN Liaison officer Eultette Green.
She says he is believed to be about 20 years old and is about five feet 7 inches long.
However residents of the volatile community are disputing the police story, claiming that Shabba had only weed in his possession and was killed while running.
The residents have since mounted roadblocks along the Sunvalley main road which is a major thoroughfare leading to Glendevon and Salt Spring.
They lit a house and debris along the roadway and remain on the road despite the police being present in the area.
