Efforts at enhancing public safety in St. James were boosted Wednesday with the launch of the Beat Officer Patrol Division.
The initiative started in the Corporate Area in March, and falls under the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB), led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie.
ACP McKenzie said beat officers will be highly visible in Montego Bay.
"They are there to ensure that they deter any criminal activities that may occur within the public space, to ensure that they are at the fingertips of citizens so that they can respond to anything that will happen there," he said, noting that the division "has proven to be a very good thing" in Kingston and St. Andrew where it was first implemented.
He said the Beat Officer Patrol division will be expanded to other urban centres across the country.
