The security forces are combing Rose Heights, St. James for suspects who engaged them in 'raging gun battle' on Thursday night during which two men were fatally shot and two illegal firearms seized.
Another man was detained.
Deputy Superintendent Linroy Edwards, Operations Officer for St. James, said a police/military team went into Sean Crescent in Rose Heights about 9:40 p.m. where a group of men was seen converged in a section of the community.
"On seeing the police/military team, [they] opened fire in our direction. We responded and returned fire and the men continued to challenge us, firing from rooftop, trees and neighbouring premises," said the senior cop.
DSP Edwards said the shootout lasted "about 45 minutes to an hour", and when it subsided, two men were found suffering from gunshot wounds and two firearms were recovered.
The men were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead.
No member of the security team was hurt in the gun battle.
Thursday night's operation is part of the St. James police's anti-crime crackdown, code named "Operation Storm", which was launched on Monday.
The operation is targeting gangs which have captured several communities in Montego Bay, St. James.
Several suspects have been detained.
