Police with facial hair? Overwhelming support for policy change within the JCF

The Police High Command has received an overwhelmingly favourable response to a recent suggestion for uniformed members of the Police Force to wear neatly groomed beards

In a recent issue of his weekly column, in the Jamaica Constabuary Force Orders, Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake sought the views  of  Force members on  the wearing of neatly groomed beards while in uniform.

Radio Jamaica understands that the proposal was followed up with a survey,  aimed at soliciting Force feedback.

It's understood that police personnel are overwhelmingly in favour of what could be  deemed a relaxation of the grooming policy surrounding the wearing of beards while in uniform.

It's understood that the survey involved 2,812 respondents, of whom 2,788 -or 99 per cent, consented to participate.

A breakdown of the survey revealed that a total of 86 per cent of males participated.

Respondents inlcuded 39 per cent of Gazetted Officers, and twenty per cent of rank and file members.

The survey concluded that 81 percent of participants either strongly
agreed. or agreed, that "The wearing of neatly trimmed facial hair in uniform enhances the professional image of the organization".

The survey also highlighted that, 90 per cent of respondents either strongly agreed or agreed with the statement, "The wearing of neatly trimmed facial hair in uniform is a sign of a modern police service."

A mere seven per cent of  respondents either strongly agreed or agreed with the statement: "The wearing of neatly trimmed facial hair in uniform may negatively impact the public's perception of police officers during
the performance of their duties".

It's understood that the Police High Command has promised to circulate a more detailed report on the study to Force members.

The High Command is also expected to start drafting an amendment to the Force's grooming policy, which is expected to include the associated constraints and conditions.
