Policeman found guilty of girlfriend's murder

Constable Lincoln McKoy has been found guilty of the 2013 murder of his girlfriend, Jessica King.

The unanimous verdict was handed down shortly after midday Wednesday.

The seven member jury retired for 45 minutes before returning with the verdict.

Constable McKoy is to be sentenced on April 29.

The policeman was arrested after his girlfriend, Jessica King, was shot on August 14, 2013 while the couple was having a dispute at the Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio.

The cop reportedly pulled his service pistol and opened fire on Ms. King, killing her on the spot.

Prosecutors led evidence that he invited her to lunch at the Marina, but pulled his weapon and shot her three times after she told him she wanted to end their five-year relationship.

McKoy shot himself twice in the head in an apparent suicide attempt but survived.

Prosecutors used the statement of a school teacher who witnessed the shooting to obtain the conviction.
16 witnesses gave testimony at the trial.

INDECOM records first murder conviction

In the meantime, the Independent Commission of Investigations says the McKoy matter represents it first murder conviction.

Additionally, it increases the number of cases completed in court for INDECOM to five with a similar number of convictions.

INDECOM arrested and charged the Constable a month after Miss King was killed.

The trial began in the Home Circuit Court on April 4 and was prosecuted by Crown Counsels, Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn and Joel Brown.

Constable McKoy gave sworn evidence and called no witnesses.
