Policemen accused of murdering Spragga Benz son acquitted

The two policemen, who were on trial for the murder of Carlton Grant Jr., the son of dancehall artiste Spragga Benz, have been acquitted.

Corporal Audley Lawrence and Constable Andre Hare were freed of the charges yesterday after the jury delivered a not guilty verdict.

A member of their legal team, Valerie Neita Robertson, says a no case submission was made.

“Well after two weeks of trial with only one eyewitness we were able to make submissions to the judge that the accused should not be called upon to answer and the judge upheld our submission so the accused were released after the jury returned the not guilty verdict based on the instructions of the judge,” Mrs. Neita Robertson said.

17-year-old Carlton was reportedly fatally shot by the police on Church Street in downtown Kingston on the night of August 23, 2008.

The cops reported that they were shot at after responding to a call that a woman had been robbed by men travelling on a bicycle.

The police said they recovered a gun in the incident.
