The Office of the Political Ombudsman is again appealing to political parties, candidates and their supporters to campaign peacefully, responsibly, and with mutual respect, in keeping with the Code of Political Conduct.
The appeal comes after armed men reportedly emerged from a motor vehicle and opened fire in the direction of Member of Parliament for Central Kingston, Donovan Williams and a group of Jamaica Labour Party supporters while they were erecting campaign material in a section of the constituency.
The incident reportedly occurred at the intersection of Tower Street and South Camp Road.
The Office of the Political Ombudsman says, while the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unconfirmed, it is appealing for calm and cooperation with the police, as they conduct their investigations.
Admitting that campaigning is intensifying and tensions may run high as the the parliamentary general election draws closer, the Office urged political actors and supporters to allow the electoral process to run its course without interference.
The Office of the Political Ombudsman says it is resolute in monitoring political activities with the support of the police, where necessary, to ensure tensions do not escalate in a manner that undermines the expected peaceful and tolerant political campaigning.
