Alok Jain, Chairman of the Port Authority of Jamaica
Chairman of the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ), Alok Jain, says several options are being examined to transport containers to and from the Caymanas Special Economic Zone (CSEZ).
The PAJ is to develop 50 acres of the 700 acres of land to support the operations of the port.
Questions have swirled as to how the movement of containers would be facilitated.
Mr. Jain says the location offers several possibilities including road, rail and even dredging channels from the port to Caymanas and transporting them by barges.
"So if we dredge this river, we are going to have barges, right, taking containers from here and all the way to the port and coming back. And then, obviously, you have the highway. There is also the possibility of having a dedicated road. We could actually have a dedicated road from this piece of land to the port. What I am saying to you is there are multiple options for connectivity. There is road, there is possibility of rail, there is the possibility of using the river and having barges. So it is a very connected piece of land," he explained.
Mr. Jain was speaking in an interview following the groundbreaking for the multi-billion dollar development.
Phase one of the CSEZ, valued at $8 billion, is set to be developed over four years.
