Prank callers are proving to be a major headache for
operators of the police 119 phone service.
It is reported that 68 per cent of the 10,000 calls received daily are prank calls mainly from children.
This represents a three per cent increase when compared to the corresponding period last year.
Superintendent in charge of the Police Control Centre, Talbert Whyte, says the prank calls increase on weekends, holidays and when children get home from school.
He says there have also been cases when female telephone operators are sexually harassed or verbally abused by adult callers.
According to Superintendent Whyte, the time has come for laws to deal with the problem as there could be instances where persons with genuine emergencies are unable to call as the system is clogged by prank callers.
In the meantime, Superintendent Whyte says the new telecommunication system, which was recently provided for control centres across the island, is working well.
He said the ability to talk to officers across the island has been strengthened with the introduction of the system.
