Rate of HIV/AIDS contained

For the first time in years, the rate of HIV/AIDS infection has been contained in Jamaica.

According to the Minister of Health Rudyard Spencer the prevalence rate of the disease now stands at 1.5 percent in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago.

These three countries have the highest number of reported cases in the region.

However the regional prevalence rate has been reduced to just above one percent from two percent.

Despite the containment, Mr. Spencer said the efficiency of some old methods are being questioned by experts, in light of the shift in the regional economic and social landscape.

He is imploring donors to rethink how they distribute funds to fight the deadly disease.

And Mr. Spencer also made an impassioned plea to parliamentarians across the region to consider holding an annual session to fully examine the health of its nations.

He says it's imperative that parliamentarians become more intimately involved in the dissemination of information.

"The involvement of political leaders would send a compelling message to all peoples to take this epidemic seriously and help us reduce stigma and discrimination," he said.

The Health Minister was addressing the eighth annual General Meeting of the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS last night at the Rose Hall Resort and Country Club.
