Remove homeschooling provision from Teaching Council Bill - lobbyist urges

A parent is recommending that the provisions related to homeschooling in the Jamaica Teaching Council (JTC) Bill be removed and a new law created to deal specifically with that mode of education.

Danielle McNish made the recommendation at the recent sitting of the Joint Select Committee reviewing the JTC Bill.

Ms. McNish said the Bill does not give full consideration to the nuances of homeschooling.

Ms McNish also took issue with the provision requiring persons who will teach children to produce a police record.

She said homeschooling families already have a mechanism for vetting instructors who will engage their children at home such as referrals from other parents.

Ms McNish is also urging the government to provide more support to homeschooling families.
