Education Minister Fayval Williams has conceded that significant restoration work on schools damaged during Hurricane Beryl in July remains to be completed, but says work is continuing apace.

Mrs. Williams, who was addressing the 2023/24 Ceremonial Opening of Schools at the Winston Jones High School in Manchester on Tuesday, said work was being done at the nearby Pratville Primary School, one of several institutions severely damaged during Hurricane Beryl.

Even as she thanked the school's stakeholders for their patience, she said Pratville Primary should soon be ready to accommodate students.

"I know everything is not back to where we want them to be across Jamaica, but we're working. We continue to work with the contractors and with the building officers to ensure that the repair work is completed as quickly as possible," she maintained.

Minister Williams added that a programme has been established to examine requests from schools for the construction of auditoriums at their institutions.

Tuesday's Ceremonial Opening of Schools was conceptualised by the office of the Custos of Manchester, Garfield Green.

It was aimed at re-engaging schools in their civic responsibilities and promoting good values and attitudes among students.
