Republic of Korea donates US$300,000 to Jamaica's hurricane recovery efforts

The government of the Republic of Korea has provided a cash donation of US$300,000 or just over J$47 million to Jamaica to support rebuilding efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The donation was formally announced during a brief handover ceremony on Wednesday at the Foreign Ministry.

In addition to the cash assistance, JTS, a Korean non-governmental organisation, has donated 200 tonnes of rice to Jamaica with a focus on assisting the country's most vulnerable communities.

JTS will also provide one container of baby and women's items.

The Embassy of the Republic of Korea said the contributions reflect the strong ties between the two countries and are intended to support humanitarian relief and recovery efforts following the hurricane which caused widespread damage across several parishes.

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on October 28, causing widespread destruction, particularly across southern and western parishes. The World Bank estimates the physical damage at US$8.8 million.

At least 45 people have been confirmed dead.
