Residents of Free Town, Clarendon upset following police fatal shooting

By Kimone Witter

Residents of Free Town, Clarendon are accusing the police of bringing violence to their community following the fatal shooting of a man on Sunday.

According to the Independent Commission of Investigations, a police team visited a location to make checks in relation to stolen property.

The cops reported that during a search of the premises, a tussle ensued between the officers and Romario Rowe.

It's reported that he was fatally shot when he allegedly attempted to grab the firearm of one of the officers.

When Radio Jamaica News visited the community on Thursday, residents were observed along the road preparing to mount a protest against the shooting.

But they were dissuaded by the father of Mr. Rowe.

One of the residents told Radio Jamaica News that the incident has disturbed the peace in the area.

"Police come kill a innocent youth, innocent Romario, you know. No man nah try disarm four police. Four police come a try arrest you, pointing gun pon yuh; no man nah try disarm no police. That a just excuse," he contended, adding that the man was not a "violence producer".

Mr. Rowe's father said he wants justice for his son, and for the officer responsible for the fatal shooting to be taken from frontline duty.

INDECOM said the police officers involved in the incident had not been issued with body-worn cameras.
