Group Senior Executive for the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, Gary Allen, was on Tuesday elected Chairman of the Media Association of Jamaica (MAJ).
Mr. Allen will complete the term of the current executive, following Dr. Claire Grant's demitting of office recently. Dr. Grant's position of Deputy Chief Executive Officer in the RJRGLEANER Communications group was made redundant.
Jamaica Observer Limited's Managing Director Dominic Beaubrun and Sun City Radio boss Steve Billings remain the two Deputy Chairmen of the Association.
In accepting the chairmanship of the MAJ, which he previously led some years ago, Mr. Allen said he viewed the assignment as transitional but underscored that there are several crucial matters on the agenda of the organisation to be addressed.
He said the overdue reviews of the Access To Information and Defamation Acts need to be pursued, even as media need to come into compliance with and collaborate to find the most effective ways to implement and manage the new Data Protection Act.
The new Chairman of the MAJ added that as the country heads into an election period, there are matters to do with political advertising, the use of Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools in political advertising that will require collaboration among all media.
