The Road Safety Unit says the death
toll from traffic accidents declined by 26% last month compared to the
corresponding period last year.
Twenty six persons were killed on the road in January this year compared to 35 in January 2009.
During the period there was also a 17% reduction in the number of fatal accidents.
There were 25 fatal crashes down from 30 in 2009.
However, the unit is concerned about the number of accidents in which children were killed.
It says in January, 19% of the persons killed in road accidents were children.
Of the total fatalities recorded five were children, four of whom were pedestrians.
This has prompted the Road Safety Unit to implore all road users to pay more attention to the safety of children.
The Unit says in coming months, it will be implementing a campaign dedicated to the safety of children.
