The Jamaica Fire Brigade says Monday morning's fire at the Church Corner disposal site in Morant Bay, St. Thomas is believed to have been started by people who were burning foam from old fridges and other appliances to extract aluminum for scrap metal.

The fire has been extinguished.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire about 4:40.

Two units from the Morant Bay and Yallahs Fire stations used water and cover material to bring the fire, which was assisted in spreading by strong winds, under control.

Assistant Superintendent at the Morant Bay Fire Station, Robert Locke, said the fire started at the front of the facility.

Assistant Superintendent Locke lamented that firefighters are called to the disposal site almost daily.

He said changes in the method of covering the dump after fires as well as the placing of a fire hydrant close to the site are among some of the recommendations of the Jamaica Fire Brigade.

There was another fire at the disposal site two weeks ago.

In the meantime, firefighters in St. Thomas have turned their attention to another section of the Church Corner disposal site which is smoldering.

Assistant Superintendent Locke said the area, at the rear of the facility, was not covered properly with dirt after a previous fire.
