SDF to resume disbursement of JFF subventions

By Kayon Raynor

The Sports Development Foundation has indicated that it will resume paying the Jamaica Football Federation's monthly subvention of J$3.5 million - which was suspended for the month of June - after the federation settled its outstanding debt of US$50,000.

SDF General Manager Denzil Wilks confirmed the development with Radio Jamaica Sports by telephone Saturday night.

"We received the payment on Friday of this week and, in fact, as a result, we have moved to ensure that they receive their monthly subvention," Wilks said.

"It is known that we had withheld the monthly subvention for June and would be prepared to withhold subventions pending the receipts of these funds," the SDF general manager added.

"We received a commitment from the president (Michael Ricketts) that the payment would be made in July and that's been done, so we will resume the payment of their subvention on a monthly basis," Wilks further explained.

On June 21, the SDF wrote to the JFF advising of its decision to suspend the monthly support after that body's inability to pay back their agreed portion of US$50,000 of the US$105,000 borrowed from Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL) chairman Chris Williams. The money was used to arrange a private charter for the Reggae Boyz to return from Suriname last month for the return leg fixture against that nation at the National Stadium.

The SDF had to settle that debt in full to Williams.
