CARICOM Chairman and Prime Minister of Grenada Dickon Mitchell

Chairman of CARICOM Dickon Mitchell says the security situation in Haiti remains delicate even as the international peace keeping force regains control of critical areas and infrastructure.
He says the Eminent Persons Group comprising former Prime Ministers Bruce Golding, Kenny Anthony and Perrie Christie is to make another visit to Haiti in the coming days.
Mr. Mitchell, who is also Prime Minister of Grenada, says the situation in Haiti remains dire.
"Gangs still control 80-85 per cent of Port-au-Prince. Haiti faces a significant humanitarian crisis - that is the risk of famine for hundreds of thousands of people. There are at least 6-800,000 displaced persons as a result. Displaced means they are...living in schools as shelters because they have no homes or places to live," he warned.
Mr. Mitchell said Haiti's Prime Minister is keen to try and get schools open in Haiti, but for that to happen, displaced persons must be put back to a place of safety.
"He has indicated that the main challenge is Port-au-Prince, but there are opportunities for people to actually move out of Port-au-Prince to other parts, which is a lot calmer, a lot safer. But it requires significant humanitarian support. And for that to happen, the security situation has to be improved," the CARICOM chairman maintained.
He said CARICOM has committed that the Eminent Persons Group will work with the Transitional Council to restore stability to the country to allow for the holding of elections.
