Senate President wants Chairman of Integrity Commission to apologise to Parliament

The President of the Jamaican Senate, Tom Tavares-Finson, chided Justice Seymour Panton, Chairman of the Integrity Commission, for his comments earlier in the day about possible sources of leaks of reports from the Commission.

Justice Panton, speaking before the Integrity Commission Oversight Committee of Parliament, said he had been taking note of reports that have been leaked to the media prior to being tabled in Parliament.

He expressed the belief that these leaks were not emanating from the office of the Integrity Commission, adding that he found it "strange that all these would be leaked immediately after it leaves the Commission and sent to Parliament."

Elaborating, he said if the leaks were emanating from the Commission, it would be strange that this would only occur after the documents are "sent away from the office."

But he quickly added he added, "I cast no aspersions."

Senator Tavares-Finson, in response, declared on Tuesday afternoon that the Chairman's remarks on the possible source of the leak were "out of order and without foundation."

"I'm startled that he could make such a suggestion, and I stand by the integrity of the Parliament, the Speaker, and the Clerk of the House, as it related to the process of tabling reports from the Integrity Commission," he said.

Furthermore, he said, "Mr Panton needs to apologise to the Parliament of Jamaica for the unfounded and outrageous suggestion."
