Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced that Jamaica will go to the polls in the general election on Thursday, September 3, 2020.

Nomination Day is Tuesday, August 18, 2020.

The Prime Minister made the announcement in the House of Representatives Tuesday evening.

Anticipation had been building for days that Mr. Holness would announce a date in parliament today. People's National Party supporters had converged outside Gordon House ahead of the sitting in anticipation of the announcement.

Mr. Holness arrived at Gordon House dressed in a black, green and gold tie to complement his suit and wore his now infamous green Desert Clarks, which he had previously told the country would indicate his readiness to call the election.

In keeping with his promise that no State of Public Emergency would be in existence during the election, the Prime Minister moved a resolution in the House of Representatives to end the measures.

After a vote, the House agreed to end the states of emergency on August 17, a day before Nomination Day.

Parliament will be dissolved on August 13.
