Sixteen per cent decline in murders so far this year

The murder toll since the start of the year stood at 762, as at August 24, according to the latest crime statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force. This is 143 fewer or 16 per cent fewer than the 905 murders for the corresponding period last year.
 
The police also revealed that 70 people were killed during the period August 3 to 24.
 
St James, has recorded 90 homicides during the period January 1 to August 24, Westmoreland, 66, St Andrew South, 61, St Catherine South, 59, and St Catherine North, 54, representing the five police divisions with the highest number of homicides.
 
Shootings are down three per cent, with 21 fewer incidents than for the corresponding period in 2023.
 
Cases of wounding, rape, robbery, and break-ins are also on the decline, compared with last year.
