Members of the public reacting to the NWC's proposed increase in water rates
By Kimone Witter
Some customers of the National Water Commission (NWC) are questioning the justification for the proposed rate increase, arguing that they should not have to pay more for a service that is already unreliable.
The customers say access to water remains a challenge, leaving them questioning what they would be paying more for.
They also do not believe the NWC's request for a 51 per cent tariff increase should be considered, pointing to the financial challenges facing many households.
"Not now, because no money no deh inna we lap. Time rough now, and then again, the water waste too much cause when the pipe burst them no come in time fi come fix it," said once customer.
"Them not even deserve a one per cent, much less 51 per cent. Three-quarter a Jamaica out a water. National Water Commission not supplying the country with water properly. We nah get enough water fi use. You can hardly get water fi drink much less fi bathe and wash. So why dem want 51 per cent increase? Dem nuh deserve it," another complained.
"First and foremost, we're in the land of wood and water," said one man, who argued that "We shouldn't be paying for water, you know. But okay, yes, we are paying for the services to bring water to our premises, right? Now, if they are seeking at this time 51 per cent, I think they are very out in their mind."
He contended that many Jamaicans are not in a position to manage an increase, adding that if the NWC were successful in getting the rate hike, this could lead other utility providers to also seek increases.
Another NWC customer suggested that if an increase is granted to the water commission, it should be done over a period of time.
"I won't say 'yes' or 'no' they deserve it. But my view is that they should have an increase gradually, don't have a big increase on the people, you understand?" he said, echoing that many will not be able to afford a large increase at once.
The country is waiting to hear whether the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) will accept the NWC's tariff application for review.
The OUR has indicated that it will communicate its decision to the NWC by October 26.
