The Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine will offer more services when the multi-billion dollar redevelopment project is completed.
The new building will complement the existing structure and help to ease the pressure on the hospital.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, during a tour Wednesday, said the expansion and refurbishing project will expand the offerings at the hospital.
"So let's take operating theatres, for example, where we now have four in the original facility. We're going to add six main and two minor. So that's eight operating theatres that are going to be brand new with all new equipment added to what is there. We now have about 470 beds. We're going to add at least 129 - 100 for regular ward space, 29 for specialist care, which means that the hospital will move to 600 beds.
"You will have more space now to place patients on wards, but even the A&E itself will move from about 15,000 square metres, I'm told, to about 17-18,000. And in terms of diagnostics, all the critical diagnostics will be available here at Spanish on including CT scan, MRI and other critical diagnostic equipment," Dr. Tufton outlined.
