Speaker should have apologised, says trade unionist

Trade unionist Helene Davis Whyte has expressed dissapointment that Speaker of the House Juliet Holness did not apologise to former Clerk to the Houses of Parliament Valrie Curtis on Tuesday for the reprimand letter that she issued to her.

Mrs Holness stated at the start of Tuesday's sitting that that her controversial letter of reprimand to Ms Curtis was not meant as a sign of disrespect to the former Clerk.

But she did not issue an apology.

Mrs Davis Whyte, General Secretary of the Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers, responded on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said Mrs Holness should have addressed the issue in its entirety.

Recalling that Ms Curtis was charged by the Speaker with committing "a gross dereliction of duty, and also that she had brought the House into disrepute," she noted that "those are very serious charges, and I think, for that reason, it is important for the teacher to either withdraw or apologise for the way in which the matter was handled."

She added that, while the Clerk has retired and possibly will not seek further employment, "certainly, she would want to retire in a circumstance where there's absolutely no cloud over how and how she carried out her duties during her tenure."
