The leadership of the St. Ann Police Division is claiming success in the reduction in incidents of violence in Steer Town.

The community is the main violent hotspot in the parish.

Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, Commanding Officer for St. Ann, said four murders and four shootings were recorded last year - a reduction compared with previous years.

Calling the decline a sign of encouragement, SSP Powell said he is hoping the strategies implemented by the police will result in a further reduction in these incidents this year.

"Since the start of this year, we have only recorded just one shooting incident in the community, which I hope that would not have happened. But just to say that we have managed to bring the perpetrator in that incident to justice, so he will be facing the court," he revealed.

The commanding officer appealed to those "bent on creating mayhem in the community to resist the urge," noting that the police will be there to ensure law and order is maintained.

SSP Powell led a walkthrough of Steer Town on Wednesday to reassure residents.
