Councillors Michael Troupe and Everes Coke
By Kimone Witter
Michael Troupe, Councillor for the Granville division in St. James, has lamented that the reduction in major crimes being touted by the police is not evident.
He was commenting on the latest US travel advisory during Thursday's monthly meeting of the St. James Municipal Corporation.
The US on Thursday issued an updated advisory for Jamaica, listing all parishes - except Portland and St. Mary - as areas prohibited for travel due to increased risk of violent crimes.
Mr. Troupe was among councillors who raised concern about the murders and shootings in St. James this week.
"We hear about the reduction [in major crimes] but we are not feeling it," he argued.
But Mr. Troupe was interrupted by Councillor Everes Coke of the Maroon Town division, who asserted that the member should "speak from a position of fact" and not feelings.
"What are the facts? What does the figure indicate? The crime is being reduced significantly, and that is a fact," Mr. Coke contended.
In April, the police reported that major crimes were down by 22 per cent for the first quarter of the year.
