The St. James Municipal Corporation on Thursday passed a resolution against an independent commission of enquiry to probe the air quality crisis and related issues at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

The resolution was passed by the 13 Jamaica Labour Party councillors.

The three PNP councillors who were present abstained from voting.

The motion was brought by Charles Sinclair, Councillor for the Montego Bay North Eastern division.

It followed a motion tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday by Opposition Leader Dr. Peter Phillips for the establishment of a commission of enquiry.

But speaking at the St. James Municpal Corporation meeting on Thursday, Mr. Sinclair said the issues at Cornwall Regional can be investigated without the commission of enquiry.

He argued that the money which would be spent on such a commission and to pay the required commissioners could be used to repair the hospital.

"You have PAHO, which is an international organisation, which is independent...and you have other organisations that we can partner with to establish what is the concerns (sic) in the commission of enquiry request," he suggested.
