After much agitation from stakeholders in the entertainment sector, the St. Thomas police will be easing a restriction it had imposed on the granting of permits for entertainment events in the parish as of September 30.
The police will allow two events per day until October 10.
Superintendent Mervin McNabb, the Head of the St. Thomas police, says the decision to suspend the granting of permits was for the safety of the patrons attending these events.
He pointed to three murders, a number of robberies and break-ins in that area in recent weeks.
Superintendent McNabb told RJR News that since the start of the year, 21 homicides occurred in the parish, nine of which were in the Morant Bay area.
He further stated that this restriction forms part of the Police High Command's 60-day Murder Reduction Initiative.
During the easing of this restriction, Superintendent McNabb said the police will be monitoring the situation on a weekly basis to see if there will be any improvement on crime in the area.
The superintendent addressed the Bar Operators, Club owners and other stakeholders at the Cornel Cove in Morant Bay on Tuesday, September 27after meeting with both Members of Parliament for Eastern and Western St. Thomas and the St. Thomas Parish Council among others.
