Stipend for jurors to be increased

Justice Minister Delroy Chuck

Persons who show up for jury duty will receive an increase in stipend.

This was announced in Parliament by Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon.

Minister Chuck said Cabinet approved the move as the government seeks to remedy the issues affecting the justice system.

"Each juror whose name is called for any circuit will be paid $2,000 for each day that juror attends. Jurors who are impanelled will now get $6,000 instead of the present $2,000, a 200 per cent increase," he announced.

Mr. Chuck said the increase will help jurors, especially those in rural areas who must travel greater distances to get to court.

"Very shortly, Madam Speaker, we will come with the regulations to change it so that hopefully, shortly, it will be executed," he promised.

The minister, who also touted his ministry's achievements, said the justice system is the best it has ever been in the country's history.

Additionally, he lauded the island's prosecutorial capabilities while applauding Paula Llewellyn's record of achievement as Director of Public Prosecutions.
