Custos of Trelawny Hugh Gentles
Custos of Trelawny Hugh Gentles is warning parents and guardians to take control of their children or the state will.
Mr. Gentles was responding to the discovery of four children, aged 15-17 years, at an illegal party with gangsters in Hague Settlement last weekend.
He said parents should return to instilling values such as obeying rules and being courteous in their children to lessen the negativity seen in society.
But while he acknowledged the gloom over the country, Mr. Gentles admitted that "it is a minority that is creating all of this mayhem" while the majority of Jamaicans are "law-abiding, peaceful people and decent human beings".
He reasoned that the minority has created a perception that there is total lawlessness, but said the "good people must do our bit to try and control the small minority" and not "let them dominate us".
The custos said Justices of the Peace in Trelawny have been instructed to work closer with the police in the fight against crime and alert them whenever there is an issue of concern in the parish.
The police have said their information suggests that several gangs - some of which are former rivals - were present at the illegal party in Hague Settlement.
This has drawn their focus to a possible shift in gang alliances and arrangements.
The Police High Command says more resources will be deployed to deal with gang activity in Trelawny.
