The Jamaica Teachers Association [JTA] fears that the aim of the Ministry of Education to establish a ratio one teacher to 25 students per class is under threat as public schools struggle with a staff shortage.

JTA President La Sonya Harrison has noted that many schools, especially those in rural communities, are struggling to fill vacancies which have been created for various reasons, including resignations, vacation leave and retirement.

She noted earlier this week that, for this 2022/2023 academic year, schools could not offer some subjects, while teachers had to deliver lessons outside of their subject areas.

Mrs Harrison said it remains to be seen whether the goal of reducing class sizes will be achieved.

She was a guest on The Morning Agenda, on Power 106 this week.
