Teachers threaten industrial action if gov't fails to amend wage offer

Newly installed President of the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA), Mark Malabver, is warning that teachers could take industrial action if the government does not amend its wage offer to the nation's 25,000 educators.

Addressing the JTA's 61st annual conference at the Princess Grand Hotel in Green Island, Hanover on Monday evening, Mr. Malabver dismissed the Ministry of Finance's four-year offer of 0% in year one, followed by 2.5% in each of the remaining three years.

That offer was made during wage talks held on August 15 when JTA representatives walked out of a meeting with Finance Minister Fayval Williams.

The JTA President described the 0% offer as disrespectful to the teachers and will not be accepted.

He also took a swipe at Finance Minister Fayval Williams when he told the delegates that "Somebody needs to tell Aunty Fay that 0?nnot buy a Probox."

The JTA maintains that the teachers should be paid a liveable wage.

Against this background, Mr. Malabver argued that the leadership of the JTA cannot guarantee normality going forward.

He said the teachers are now more militant than ever, adding that they will not accept being insulted any longer.

Mr. Malabver also urged the Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon to side with Jamaica's educators as they continue their battle for improved wage agreements.
