PNP maintains concern about buses procured for rural schools transport programme

Opposition Spokesperson on Transport Mikael Phillips

Opposition Spokesperson on Transport Mikael Phillips continues to defend the People's National Party's criticism of the Government's recent procurement of buses for the rural school bus programme.

The opposition party has described the move as potentially costly and unsafe for rural students.

Mr Phillips, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, reiterated the concerns raised by Opposition Senator Peter Bunting about the safety of the buses.

He claimed no proper testing was done before the purchase of the buses, adding that the long wheel base of the buses could make them unsuitable for Jamaica's narrow, hilly rural roads.

The Shadow Minister also argued that the government bypassed existing private operators in the current school transport system, undermining investments already made by small service providers.
