A dramatic late night gun battle between police and gunmen along the Linstead Bypass in St. Catherine has left three men dead and two police officers wounded.
One of the officers was treated and released while the other remains hospitalised in stable condition.
A major manhunt has been launched by the St. Catherine North Police to capture two men who escaped.
Investigators said two firearms are recovered from the scene.
The incident occurred about 10:30 p.m. Monday, when a team of police intercepted a white Toyota Axio motor car with five men aboard.
Upon being signalled to stop, the men reportedly opened fire, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire.
During the shootout, three gunmen and two policemen were wounded.
The gunmen were pronounced dead at hospital.
Police sources say the incident forms part of an ongoing intelligence-led operation targeting armed criminal groups operating in St. Catherine and surrounding areas.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the incident.
