Tomato farmers in south St. Elizabeth are appealing to the Ministry of Agriculture for help to secure a market for their produce as hundreds of pounds are going to waste.

This is due to an over production of the fruit that is eaten as a vegetable.

Simon Witter, a farmer of Cheapside in St. Elizabeth says higglers are selling tomatoes for as low as $10 per pound.

"No tomato nah sell. [In areas] like Delightful, Cheapside, Junction, Top Hill, Bull Sav, Red Bank... it flushy. It in the garden like that; it nah move.... $10 and $15 a pound for tomato. That very, very crazy," he lamented.

This is a turnaround from the shortage which saw prices skyrocketing following the damage caused by Tropical Storm Raphael in November last year.
