Trade unions in Suriname plan protest over proposed 100% increase in VAT

Several trade unions in Suriname yesterday announced plans to stage protest action if the government increases the value added tax by 100 per cent from today.

The unions say the government's intent to increase the VAT on fuel from 5-10 per cent will result in an increase in the cost of living and significantly reduce the purchasing power of workers.

In an October 26 letter, the unions gave President Chandrikapersad Santokhi until yesterday to indicate whether his administration would go ahead with the increase.

The VAT Act Evaluation committee has also sent a draft amendment proposal to Parliament.
