A policeman remains in hospital with multiple injuries after being mowed down by a motorist during a traffic stop along Old Hope Road in St. Andrew on Thursday.

About 6:00 p.m., two officers were providing beat duty and security coverage along the roadway when they stopped a black Toyota Fielder motor car for a traffic breach.

While interacting with the cops, the motorist drove off, hitting one of the officers and running him over while speeding away.

The injured policeman was rushed to hospital where he was admitted in serious condition.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, head of the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTEB), told Radio Jamaica News that the cop sustained a number of bruises and has undergone several tests.

ACP McKenzie said the vehicle involved in the incident was found abandoned in the Liguanea area, but the driver has not been located.

The PSTEB head said investigations are taking place into allegations the motorist refused to interact with the police because the cops were fitted with body cameras.

The owner of the vehicle, a woman, is being questioned.
