Transport Minister Daryl Vaz
By Prince Moore
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says he has ordered a review of the emergency plan at Sangster International Airport following last week's incident in which 71-year-old Leroy Smith died.
Mr. Vaz said he has received a report from MBJ Airports Limited, operator of Sangster International, and the Airports Authority of Jamaica.
He said he is awaiting another report from the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority.
But Mr. Vaz said based on the report he received, he is satisfied that the established requirements for the provision of health services are in place at the airport.
The Transport Minister instructed that a review be done immediately to include the Ministry of Health.
"I'm at a loss to understand why there has been no annual review based on the increase in passenger and staff complement at MBJ. We are now at approximately four million passengers, I understand, and I can't believe that no review has been done," he declared.
In the interim, he has instructed AAJ that a doctor should be on call at the airport and an ambulance and full staff complement must be stationed onsite until the review is completed.
