Trinidad could sink if a major earthquake hits, says seismologist

In Trinidad, seismologist Dr. Illias Papadopoulos has said the city of  Port of Spain is in grave danger of sinking below the ground in the event of a major earthquake.

Dr. Papadopoulos, who was speaking during a Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain meeting on Tuesday, warned that a major earthquake is due to hit the region in coming years.

He said while an earthquake cannot be predicted, the region should expect an earthquake with a magnitude of seven or more approximately every 27 years and he said it has been long overdue.

Dr. Papadoupolos, an engineering seismologist at The University of  the West Indies Seismic Research Centre, said there has been vivid earthquake activity in the region in recent years, with an average 2,200 small earthquakes being recorded annually.

Trinidad continues to experience several aftershocks following the 6.9 magnitude earthquake which jolted the island on Tuesday.

The latest aftershock occurred Wednesday morning, triggering more concern among an already traumatised population.
