Tropical Storm Alberto has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, marking the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.
The storm is bringing heavy rain and coastal flooding to much of the Texas Gulf Coast.
The National Hurricane Center says some slight strengthening is forecast Wednesday before the centre of Alberto reaches land on Thursday.
Rapid weakening is expected once the centre of the storm moves inland, and is likely to dissipate over Mexico.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted that the hurricane season that began on June 1 and runs through November 30, is likely to be well above average, with between 17 and 25 named storms.
