Trouble looms in trucking trade

More problems are looming in the local trucking trade over plans by the police to enforce weight restriction regulations. The truckers have declared that they will have to withdraw their service if the Government does not grant a 90 day suspension of the enforcement which was scheduled to get underway on Monday. This follows a meeting Sunday of the All-Island Truckers Association.

Leonard Green, president of the Association, is insisting that immediate enforcement cannot be accommodated by the members.

“There are some truckers who will be forced to withdraw their service until the adjustments are made. There are a number of adjustments that need to be made: there are some truckers who will have make some adjustments with their rates; there are some operations that will require adjustments include the installation of scales; and of course the public and our clients need to be fully advised of the impending changes,” said Mr. Green.

The group represents more than 1,000 truckers across the island.

The truckers are arguing that while they should operate within the weight limit, their concern is that the system has fallen down over the years, and there is now a sudden strict enforcement of the law.
