By Kimone Witter

Two British nationals were on Wednesday arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine through Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston.

About 4:25 p.m., investigators assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division were conducting security checks for passengers boarding a British Airways flight destined for London.

During routine interviews, a British man's actions aroused the suspicion of the police and his luggage was searched. This led to the discovery of seven kilogrammes or 15 pounds of cocaine concealed in the lining of two suitcases.

The police say during the same screening process, a British woman's actions also aroused suspicion, and a thorough search of her luggage revealed approximately 7.2 kilogrammes or 16 pounds of cocaine in the lining of her suitcases.

The combined street value of the cocaine is approximately £454,400 or J$92.7 million.

Both people were taken into custody.
