Transport Minister Daryl Vaz

Ride-hailing company Uber has set out several recommendations for the regularising of its operations in Jamaica.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says he met with Uber representatives several weeks ago to express government's concern about the unregulated nature of the service.
Following the meeting, the Transport Minister says Uber set out a framework for its operations in Jamaica.
"The proposal that they have sent to regulate ridesharing services in Jamaica includes two documents: A regulatory proposal for ridesharing services, including requirements for the transport network companies, vehicles and drivers such as insurance and safety verification, and an analysis of the general framework for ridesharing services, including best practices and lessons learned from different countries and states around the world. So, they have put in this document to me how they intend to regulate fares for the taxi in meeting with the fare structure that is imposed by the Transport Authority in Jamaica and the validation of taxi licences," Mr. Vaz outlined.
The minister has said, so far, Uber is the only foreign based provider to have sent a proposal to the government on how it intends to operate in Jamaica.
